So I wrote an extended write-up of SCA #1 and will post it when I have time to give it more of a review. In the meantime, here's a quick post of my second SCA draft. I haven't scrutinized it, but I think it's one of the better Shards-block draft I've had. It was Swiss, which explains part of it (and also helps explain why I like Swiss).

The draft capture missed the first pack, which is a bummer. I know there was the classic Branching Bolt/Oblivion Ring pick, and that there was also a Stinger. I went into the draft looking for reasons to go Naya or Jund to set up a great pack three that I'm comfortable with. Oblivion Ring is really close to Branching Bolt with this mindset, and if those are my shards of choice, you could say Branching Bolt is the more flexible pick. But the O Ring deals with, like, everything.

My Final Deck:

I had a scare in the first round when I lost game one to a lower-skilled player with a Sledge of his own after having only three lands left in my library after nine turns. Not a lot of spells to work with.

I took the second and third games more easily than would have against a better player. He made some crucial timing misplays, including casting his Winged Coatl in response to my main-phase Captured Sunlight. I cascade into removal for it, clearing the way for a devastating attack.

Round two was a slaughter, with my deck getting a great mix of spells and land and drawing well. I pull a fun move after he casts Crystallization on my Retaliator Griffin and swings for 2 to make it a 4/4 by untapping, playing Oblivion Ring targeting the Crystallization, and now I have a 4/4 flyer that goes the distance from there. Try that, Branching Bolt!

Round three is extremely tight in game one which I barely pull out in the face of mistakes on my part and good use of an Ethersworn Shieldmage on his part. Sledge bails me out, though, and I start up a game.

Game two was a fun, tense affair with lots of back and forth and great play-arounds on both sides. I pull it out with a couple of nice plays, including Gleam of Resistance in response to his attack when I have a Sledged-up Matca Rioters tapped down by a Controlled Instincts. That kills a creature and gains me back some needed life, allowing me to draw and cast Apocalypse Hydra for the first time in the draft. It works out:

I equip the Sledge to the Hydra, and he actually has another Ethersworn Shieldmage to stave off defeat for a turn, but not only does a four-creature gang block with undamagable creatures not take him down, I still trample over for 7 points of lifelink. SEEMS GOOD.

A nice way to finish.
